In the profiling phase, you determine the specialisation(major) for your further studies. Before you can register for modules, you must select four of the six majors on offer in PAUL. Please note that the specialisation selection can only be changed once.

A total of 80 ECTS credits must be earned in the breadth and depth of the major.

In the breadth of the major, you complete 10 ECTS per major.

In the depth of major, however, you are free to choose the majors in which you complete the remaining 40 ECTS. You do not have to specialise in every major.

You can find out here which requirements you must fulfil in order to receive the label "with a focus on Taxation, Accounting & Finance" on your certificate.

Students on the B. Sc. in Business Administration and Economics can also take more modules in Business Education as part of a specialisation. The information brochure below is intended to give an impression of business education on the one hand and on the other hand to show how the options in the assessment and profiling phase of the Bachelor's degree programme can be used to ideally prepare for the "Master of Science in Business Education" or the "Master of Education in Business Education - Teaching Qualification at Vocational Colleges", for example. This is followed by a selection of possible prospects and job profiles that can be pursued after successfully passing the Bachelor's and/or Master's examination.

The catalogue of specialisations in Business Education can be viewed here as part of an information brochure (as of November 2015).

Information systems are permeating our living and working environments. Business Informatics is succeeding in digitising companies, creating new currencies, networking machines and people, generating knowledge from data, making optimal use of resources and enabling work in the crowd. According to the discussion paper published by the McKinsey Global Institute, future employees will need more and more technical skills ("basic digital skills", "advanced IT skills & programming") in addition to social skills in order to be able to solve complex tasks in their day-to-day work.

As part of your Business Administration and Economics degree, you have the opportunity to focus on Business Informatics and thus acquire knowledge and skills that will enable you to successfully shape digitalisation. A connection to programming is possible if you are interested, but not necessary. In the 2017 CHE ranking, the Business Informatics department at Paderborn University was ranked among the top in 16 out of 22 categories - making it the top-rated department in the German-speaking world. Our diverse modules on offer include basic and methods courses, as well as coursework and seminars on specialist topics such as business process management, business information systems, digital markets, operations research, data analytics and social computing. All modules are characterised by a strong application orientation, but also by a close connection to research.

Our modules address the following questions, among others:

  • How do people network using digital social networks (e.g. Instagram) and how do online communities work?
  • How must a business process be organised so that an order placed in an online shop can be delivered on the same day?
  • How do product reviews on digital marketplaces come about and to what extent do they influence purchasing decisions?
  • How can text mining of Twitter messages be used to find out how satisfied customers are with a company's products and services?
  • How can a container ship be optimally loaded to minimise the number of journeys and thus the environmental impact?

In addition to the module "Fundamentals of Business Informatics" in the assessment phase, you are free to elect up to 50 ECTS from the following modules in the profiling phase in order to deepen your technical and methodological knowledge in the field of Business Informatics. On the one hand, this will provide you with excellent preparation for future professional tasks in the field of digitalisation. On the other hand, you will qualify for the Master's degree programme in Management Information Systemsif you would like to specialise in Business Informatics in your Master's degree course.
