The student project area "oikos" has been campaigning for sustainability at Paderborn University since 2009. The association's many years of commitment have now been recognised with the alumni network's award for "Outstanding Commitment 2024". Since 2013, the alumni prize has been awarded to student groups, initiatives or student councils at Paderborn University that have shown particular initiative and commitment to a project or task. The prize money amounts to 1,000 euros.
About the "oikos" team
The focus of "oikos Paderborn e. V." is the exchange of ideas on sustainability topics and the realisation of concrete actions and workshops. For example, the members take part in the spring cleaning rubbish collection campaign organised by the waste disposal and city cleaning company ASP or get involved in the sustainability fair "Libofair". On campus, they present themselves at the "Sustainability Chillout", the night flea market and the AStA Christmas market. They are also involved in internal university groups. In this way, students are sensitised to the topic of sustainability during their studies and acquire the corresponding skills and values that they will represent and implement in their later professional life.
The Paderborn "oikos Chapter" is part of a student network founded in 1987 in St. Gallen, whose work is continued today as the umbrella organisation "oikos international". Since its foundation, students at more than 40 universities around the world have been committed to representing sustainable topics at their universities and integrating them into the university curriculum and campus life.
