Prizes and awards for eleven Paderborn University academics
Exceptional research topics, outstanding theses and special social commitment - every year, Paderborn University recognises special achievements by its young academics and students. Eleven academics received awards at this year's New Year's Reception. In addition to prizes from the Presidential Board, awards were also presented by the University Society and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Prof Dr Dr Claus Reinsberger, neurologist and head of the Institute of Sports Medicine, and Dr Tanuj Hasija from the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology received the Paderborn University Research Award, which supports exceptional projects and bold scientific ideas. To predict epileptic seizures, the scientists are developing a new type of system for a so-called "wearable", a device worn on the wrist that provides forecasts in real time. Their project will receive prize money totalling 150,000 euros.
Outstanding doctoral dissertations honoured
On behalf of the Presidential Board, Prof Dr Johannes Blömer, Vice President for Research and Young Academics at Paderborn University, presented five academics with awards for their outstanding doctoral dissertations, each endowed with prize money of 2,000 euros. Business information scientist Dr Philipp zur Heiden was honoured for his work on the conceptualisation of location information on digital platforms, mechanical engineer Dr Florian Hengsbach received the prize for his work entitled "Development of a CrMoVW hot-work tool steel with optimised weldability for additive manufacturing" and physicist Dr Maximilian Protte for his research in the field of mesoscopic quantum optics. Cultural scientist Dr. Alexandra Krebs researched stories in digital space and historical learning in the "App into History" in her doctoral dissertation and Dr. Anna Kamneva-Wortmann was awarded the prize for her work entitled "Fashion networks - fashion swarms Spatial coordination and temporal synchronisation in bottom-up organised vestimentary cultures".
Prizes for special theses and international students
As Chairman of the University Society, Prof Dr Andreas Siebe awarded prizes to two students for their outstanding theses. Johanna Rothgänger in the category "Engineering and Natural Sciences" and Yolanda Schmidt in the category "Humanities and Social Sciences including Economics" each received 1,300 euros. The University Society's prize for international students with outstanding academic achievements and great social commitment went to Michele Tomea Mallorquin.
The DAAD also awards an annual prize for international students at each university. Prof Dr Torsten Meier, Vice President for International Relations at Paderborn University, presented this year's prize to Thao Le Nguyen, who is studying at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics.
