The Data Literacy Certificate
All students at Paderborn University have the opportunity to acquire the "Data Literacy" certificate by completing certain modules. The concept of the certificate is based on the Data Literacy Charter initiated by the Stifterverband. Data literacy encompasses the ability to collect, manage, analyse and apply data in a critical manner. All courses are at Bachelor's level and can be taken by students from all faculties either via the Studium Generale or as part of the normal study plan.

Basic information about the certificate
Below you will find all the information on the modules you need to take in order to obtain the certificate.
This module focuses on the application-oriented perspective. Business informatics deals with the design and analysis of information systems in business and society. The module provides a summarising overview of the structure and areas of application of information systems. It also provides initial technical insights (e.g. IT infrastructures, data management, IT security). Further information on the module can be found here.
Students of the Bachelor of Business Information Systems must take the module "Fundamentals of Information Management" instead. Further information on the module can be found here.
This module focuses on the technical and methodological perspective. It deals with the methods along the life cycle of a data science project, from the formulation of the problem to the collection, preparation and visualisation of the data to the recognition of patterns and trends in the data using machine learning methods (e.g. regression, classification, clustering). In addition, initial insights into the socio-cultural perspective are also provided by critically discussing ethical issues surrounding the use of data and algorithms (e.g. responsibility, fairness) in business and society.
