18th "International Conference on Information Systems" at Paderborn University with innovative impulses
Setting the course for a responsible digital future together: The progressive spread of digital technologies has improved our private and professional lives in many ways. However, the great impact of these technologies also brings with it great responsibility. At the 18th "International Conference on Information Systems" (WI) in September, numerous experts from Germany, Austria and Switzerland came to Paderborn to discuss how we can shape the digital transformation responsibly. The event was organised by the Department of Information Systems at Paderborn University.
Conference patron Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, emphasised in his video message that responsible action helps us to trust, accept and use digital technologies. Prof Dr Birgitt Riegraf, President of Paderborn University, emphasised: "Our aim is to play a constructive role in shaping the digital transformation and to provide critical support. Paderborn has a long tradition in the field of information technology. Not only Heinz Nixdorf, but also numerous software and technology companies are based here. I am therefore delighted that Paderborn University is hosting the most important conference for business informatics this year."
Digital technologies - digital responsibility
For four days, a total of 556 participants exchanged views on the latest research in Paderborn's Zukunftsmeile 2 and the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF). In a panel discussion, experts from industry and science spoke about the growing importance of fairness, ethics and humanity in our digital world. Prof. Dr. Michael Rosemann, Director of the QUT Centre for Future Enterprise in Australia, addressed the topic of "learning from the future" in his keynote speech. He argued in favour of developing a shared understanding of possible future scenarios in order to better tackle current challenges. IT managers from international companies and organisations also discussed the role of IT managers. Among other things, they addressed the fact that digital responsibility begins where the legal framework has not yet been defined - because technological development is usually one step ahead of regulation.
Digitalisation "made in Paderborn"
For the first time, a student challenge was also held as part of the WI, in which schools from Paderborn and the surrounding area presented their digital ideas for a sustainable future. The "Geteilte Mensa" team from Pelizaeus Gymnasium and Reismann Gymnasium presented a virtual fridge as an intelligent solution to reduce food waste. The idea: an app reminds you of approaching food expiry dates, provides storage tips and suggests recipes based on available ingredients. The students were awarded first place and prize money of 600 euros, sponsored by Sparkasse Paderborn-Höxter-Detmold.
