Paderborn University students impress in stock market simulation game

For four months, students at Paderborn University traded securities - not on the real stock exchange, however, but as part of the savings banks' stock market simulation game. With a virtual starting capital of 50,000 euros, they developed their own investment strategies, observed developments on the financial markets and made buy and sell decisions in real time. In addition to economic success, sustainability also played an important role: socially and environmentally responsible investments are recognised in a separate category in the competition.

Once again this year, the participants put their knowledge to good use. Over several months, they analysed financial markets, invested in various securities and optimised their portfolios. They then presented their strategies to Andreas Hagemeier from Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold-Höxter, among others. The securities specialist added practical insights to the presentation and answered the students' questions.

The business game was accompanied by a seminar organised by the Chair of Banking and Finance at Paderborn University. In it, professors Dr André Uhde and Sarah Herwald taught the basics of securities trading and the financial markets: What forms of investment are there? Which financial instruments are traded on the stock exchange? And how can the value of a security be assessed? The course is aimed at students on Bachelor's degree programmes in the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics and is offered every winter semester.

The most successful students at Paderborn University were honoured for their achievements at the end of March in the VIP lounge of the Home Deluxe Arena. One of the award winners was a team from the accompanying seminar. Students from Paderborn University were delighted to receive prize money totalling 2,450 euros.

The next round of the stock market simulation game will take place from the beginning of October to January. Registrations are possible from 14 September 2026.
