The students had four months to invest their virtual seed capital of 50,000 euros - ideally in an economical and sustainable way

The savings banks' stock market simulation game simulates events on the securities markets. With a virtual starting capital of 50,000 euros, participants can invest in various securities in real time. In addition to a well-founded trading strategy, the concept of sustainability also plays an important role in their own success, as socially and ecologically sensible management is rewarded in a separate sustainability assessment. But what investment strategies are there? Which financial securities are actually traded on the stock exchange and how do I measure the value or performance of a security? Prof Dr André Uhde and Sarah Herwald from the Chair of Banking and Finance impart this knowledge to Paderborn University students in a seminar accompanying the stock market simulation game. This course is open to all students on Bachelor's degree programmes in the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics every winter semester.

This year, 51 teams of Paderborn University students put their investment knowledge into practice and bought and sold securities over several months. They explained their strategies in a final presentation to Andreas Hagemeier, among others. The securities specialist from Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold-Höxter added practical expertise to the presentations and answered numerous questions from the seminar participants.

The most successful Paderborn University students were honoured on 5 March 2025, including a team from the accompanying seminar. The Paderborn University students were delighted to receive prize money totalling 4,550 euros.

Andreas Hagemeier, Anna-Lena Wenzel and Neele Münsterteicher from Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold-Höxter congratulated the winners on their good performance in the exciting game phase. Andreas Hagemeier motivated the students to actively invest in an equity-based pension scheme, even when there is uncertainty on the stock market and regardless of market sentiment.

Outlook: Stock market simulation game 2026

The next round of the stock market simulation game will take place from the beginning of October to January. Registrations are possible from 15 September 2025.
