Julia encounters a mix of modernity and tradition in South Korea

Julia, 24 years old, is studying for a Master's degree in Taxation, Accounting and Finance. Her semester abroad took her to one of the largest women's universities in the world - EWHA Womans University in the heart of Seoul, Korea. Just the right choice for Julia, as she still raves: "Seoul is an exciting and fascinating city full of contrasts! From historic palaces to vibrant shopping districts and trendy cafés, there is something new to discover in every neighbourhood. Especially recommended: the Namsan Tower with its view of the skyline and the lively night markets with street food, which you should definitely try!"

International friendships and exciting modules

In addition to the cultural and urban highlights, it was above all the international exchange that made Julia's stay so enriching. "EWHA Womans University not only has a fantastic campus in the centre of Seoul, but also an incredibly diverse range of courses. The exciting modules opened up completely new perspectives for me," she reports.

The Paderborn student was particularly impressed by the lively international community: "It was so easy to get to know great people quickly and make friends with people from all over the world. The exchange with fellow students from different cultures not only enriched the discussions in class, but also broadened my view of my department." The wide range of courses at the EWHA also allowed Julia to bring an interdisciplinary approach to her studies, which helped her grow both professionally and personally.

Discovering Korea: Excursions and unforgettable experiences

But it wasn't just the university and the city that offered the 24-year-old a variety of experiences. Excursions with other exchange students, such as a visit to the impressive fortress complex in Suwon, where Julia explored the fascinating architecture and historical significance of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, or a trip to Busan, Korea's second largest city, rounded off her time in Korea. "Busan was simply fantastic - whether relaxing days on the beaches such as Haeundae Beach, the magical atmosphere of the Gamcheon Culture Village with its colourful houses or a visit to the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple right by the sea. Every moment was a highlight," Julia recalls.

Another unforgettable experience was a hike in the Seoraksan National Park. "I was completely amazed by Korea's nature - the clear air, the impressive mountains and the spectacular views were a wonderful counterbalance to city life in Seoul."

The visit to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) was a completely different but equally formative experience. "I was able to experience history up close here," says Julia. "The contrast between the tranquillity of the surroundings and the significance of the place made a lasting impression on me." Julia found the conversation with a guide, who talked about the division of Korea, particularly moving. "It showed me once again how present history is for many people here."

A culinary adventure

The Korean cuisine was simply unique for Julia: "Whether it was bibimbap, tteokbokki or Korean BBQ - I tried so many new, delicious dishes. I was particularly impressed by the variety of side dishes, known as banchan, which turn every meal into a small feast." She experienced the hospitality of the Koreans time and time again: "Every time I tried to order in Korean, I was encouraged with a smile and helped with my pronunciation." Julia was particularly impressed by visiting traditional markets such as the Gwangjang Market. Here, she not only tasted authentic dishes such as hotteok (stuffed pancakes), but was also captivated by the lively atmosphere and the warmth of the vendors.

Another culinary highlight was a joint jeongol (hotpot) with friends, where all the ingredients were cooked right at the table. "It was not only a culinary experience, but also a nice moment of togetherness - eating is much more than just food in Korea, it brings people together."

Conclusion: a journey that leaves its mark

For Julia, her semester abroad in Seoul was an unforgettable experience. "I was immediately fascinated by Korea - it was the perfect mix of cultural experiences, new perspectives and great friendships. A semester abroad at EWHA Womans University in Seoul was the opportunity for me to experience this fascination. Seoul is a city that never sleeps, full of life and energy - and I can only recommend anyone to spend a semester there." Whether it's the breathtaking city lights, the warmth of the people or the variety of opportunities - Julia knows that this time will stay with her forever.
