Doctoral students, graduates of the faculty and their relatives are cordially invited to celebrate their successful graduation together with us.

The next Graduation Ceremony is planned for 16th November 2024. Registrations will be possible from October. In addition, all graduates will have the opportunity to sign the yearbook.

The Day of Economics consists of a day and an evening event, for each of which you must register separately. You also have the opportunity to have your name entered in the graduate yearbook.

Ceremonial awarding of certificates

The Economics Day begins with a ceremonial awarding of degree certificates in the Auditorium Maximum and the honouring of the best graduates and doctoral candidates. The graduates can also look forward to a champagne reception and a photo box with gowns. Together we want to reminisce and create new memories.

Interview with Eugen Dimant

Dr. Eugen Dimant Festredner am Tag der Wirtschaftswissenschaften 2024
What academic background have you completed?

After graduating from Ratsgymnasium in Bielefeld, I completed almost my entire academic education at Paderborn University: From 2006 to 2010, I studied Economics (B.Sc.), followed by two Master's degrees in the years 2010 to 2012: one in International Economics (M.Sc.) and another in Business Sciences (M.Sc.), both as best of the year. I then began my doctorate at UPB in 2012 at the Chair of Institutional Economics and Economic Policy under Prof. Dr. Burkhard Hehenkamp, which I continued in the meantime as a fellow at Harvard University and completed summa cum laude in 2015 with the topic "Economics of Corruption and Crime - Interdisciplinary Approach to Behavioural Ethics". The 'Gesellschaft für experimentelle Wirtschaftsforschung' (GfeW) named my doctorate the best German experimental research paper of 2015/2016. Today I am a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the eight Ivy League universities in the USA, and this summer I was a visiting professor at Stanford University. I have also worked at Yale University and the University of Oxford.

What is the focus of your research?

In my research, I mainly focus on experimental behavioural economics, in particular behavioural ethics and behaviour change. In addition, I study the interplay of corruption, terrorism and migration, which concerns me on a personal level, as I myself emigrated to Germany as a refugee from Moldova after the collapse of the Soviet Union. From 2022 to 2023, I worked as a behavioural economist in the White House under the Biden administration, where I dealt with issues of opioid abuse among US veterans. Despite my strongly academic career, I previously worked at KPMG, SAP, Rödl & Partner and KfW Bank, among others.

What characterises Eugen Dimant as a keynote speaker?

Eugen Dimant will be speaking about his extraordinary life at this year's Business Day. He is a living example of how, with ambition and determination, a graduate of Paderborn University can make it all the way to becoming a professor at an Ivy League university in the USA. He is a role model for all graduates of our university who are interested in research and shows that even big dreams can come true.

Interested students are welcome to get in touch with him via his website!
