"#myfirstresearchpaper" project launched in April
Student papers that become research papers - for many, this is the start of an academic career. In April, Paderborn University launched the teaching innovation project "#myfirstresearchpaper" from the Department of Information Systems to improve both the quantity and quality of student submissions to academic conferences and journals. The aim is to develop a range of modules designed to give students the skills to turn their work into scientific publications. The two-year project is being funded by the Foundation for Innovation in University Teaching with 100,000 euros as part of the "Freiraum 2023" sponsors programme.
The courses offered by the Department of Information Systems at Paderborn University are characterised by a high degree of research orientation and research-based learning approaches. Nevertheless, intensive supervision and individual guidance of the students is necessary in order to develop a written elaboration into a scientific working paper ready for submission. As this is time-consuming, "#myfirstresearchpaper" aims to systematise the process with a specific module that offers students corresponding teaching material. "With the help of the project, we want to substantially increase the number of scientific publications resulting from student work so that the knowledge generated is not lost," hopes Dr Christian Bartelheimer, PostDoc from the Chair of Business Information Systems and head of the project. "The students also gain in-depth insights into research processes, procedures at chairs and areas of activity in science. This also encourages students to consider their own career goals, as they actively consider a possible academic career at an early stage," explains Prof Dr Dennis Kundisch from the Chair of Digital Markets, who is also the project manager. Maike Althaus and Michelle Müller from the Chair of Digital Markets are involved as research assistants.
In co-operation with the association "Die Wirtschaftsinformatik e. V.", the papers will be disseminated to the business informatics community. It is planned to make the teaching materials available to other business informatics locations as Open Educational Resources (OER) - for example via the "ORCA.nrw" platform.
