No green product without green en­ergy – why the en­ergy trans­ition must reach the fact­ory floor

About the talk:

Recycled paper, electric cars, wind turbines: all three are designed to protect the climate – and all three require energy to produce. Every product carries with it the emissions generated during its manufacture. The lecture demonstrates how energy is used in industry and explains why some processes are easy to electrify whilst others need to be completely reimagined. It also shows that industrial companies are not merely consumers; rather, as flexible customers, heat suppliers and investors, they are becoming an integral part of renewable energy systems.

About the speaker:

Henning Meschede heads the Energy Systems Engineering department at Paderborn University. In his research and teaching, he focuses on integrated energy systems characterised by electrification, sector coupling and flexibility. A particular focus is on the energy transition in industry and related issues concerning site transformations and sustainability. Henning Meschede is Head of the Competence Centre for Sustainable Energy Technology (KET), a member of the Software Innovation Campus Paderborn (SICP) and the Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES).

“UPB for Future” lecture series

For the seventh time, the Educational Innovation and Higher Education Didactics Office, in collaboration with Prof. Dr René Fahr’s research group, is organising a joint lecture series on sustainability during the winter semester 26/27. The lecture series is entitled “UPB for Future” and is aimed at students from all disciplines and at all stages of their studies, as well as staff and the interested public. In a series of weekly lectures, the ecological, social and economic dimensions of sustainability will be explored and discussed.
