How can economic success and social responsibility be reconciled? Drawing on her personal story and her work with nuruCoffee and nuruWomen, Sara Nuru offers insights into the practice of social enterprise. She demonstrates how an entrepreneurial idea has evolved into a model that combines economic activity with social impact. The focus is on fair value creation, women’s economic self-determination and the question of how entrepreneurial activity can contribute to greater social participation. A keynote speech on entrepreneurship, social sustainability and the question of how we define economic success – not only through growth, but also through impact.
About the speaker:
Sara Nuru is a social entrepreneur, model and founder. She rose to fame in 2009 as the winner of Germany’s Next Top Model and uses her public platform to champion fairness, empowerment and sustainable business practices. Together with her sister Sali, she founded the social enterprise nuruCoffee, which sells fair-trade Ethiopian coffee, as well as the charity nuruWomen, which provides women in Ethiopia with access to microloans and education.
Young women in particular admire Sara for her courageous move away from the glamorous world of fashion towards meaningful social enterprise. In her talks and panel discussions, she inspires people to take responsibility, follow their own authentic path and make a difference with courage and conviction.
Today, she is regarded as the voice of a new generation of female entrepreneurs who place purpose, sustainability and social impact at the heart of everything they do.
“UPB for Future” Lecture Series
For the seventh time, the Office for Educational Innovation and University Didactics, in collaboration with Prof. Dr René Fahr’s research group, is organising a joint lecture series on sustainability during the winter semester 26/27. The lecture series is entitled “UPB for Future” and is aimed at students from all disciplines and at all stages of their studies, staff, and the interested public. In weekly lectures, the ecological, social and economic dimensions of sustainability will be explored and discussed.
