About the lecture:
For a long time, medicine relied on a ‘standard person’ as the benchmark for research, knowledge and treatment. This has meant that, to this day, many people and their lived experiences are either missing from the body of medical knowledge or are only inadequately taken into account. The result is a healthcare system that does not serve and treat everyone equally well.
A gender- and discrimination-sensitive approach to medicine helps to close these gaps in data and knowledge. It lays the foundation for a future of medicine in which we are all treated well and fairly – regardless of gender, experiences of racism, financial means or social status. The focus is on the origins of the problem, its significance for clinical practice, existing challenges and the question of how sustainable change can be achieved.
About the speaker:
Awa Naghipour is a doctor, research fellow and assistant in the field of gender- and discrimination-sensitive medicine. She conducts research, teaches and advises on inclusive, anti-discriminatory and context-sensitive healthcare, with a focus on health equity and knowledge transfer into teaching, clinical and health policy practice. A central focus of her work is on how an inclusive, gender- and discrimination-sensitive clinical practice can be structurally embedded and ensured – for example, at an institutional level through clinical guidelines. She is a co-initiator and co-founder of the non-profit association Feministische Medizin e.V. and is active in health policy within numerous national and international expert bodies, including the German Women’s Council, co-spokesperson for the Working Group on Gender-Sensitive Medicine within the German Association of Women Doctors, on the Task Force on Anti-Discrimination in Healthcare of the Berlin State Health Conference, and in the DFG network “Structural Injustice in Bioethics”.
“UPB for Future” lecture series
For the seventh time, the Office for Educational Innovation and University Didactics, in collaboration with Prof. Dr René Fahr’s research group, is organising a joint lecture series on the topic of sustainability during the winter semester 26/27. The lecture series is entitled “UPB for Future” and is aimed at students from all disciplines and at all stages of their studies, staff, and the interested general public. In weekly lectures, the ecological, social and economic dimensions of sustainability will be explored and discussed.
