About the talk:
Climate denial, disinformation campaigns, AI-generated content – the increasing spread of fake news on the internet poses a major threat to our democratic society. Even (primary school) children use the internet and come across misinformation there – but how can we equip them at an early stage to critically question such content? This talk highlights the societal dangers of misinformation and, drawing on a project involving Year 3 pupils, demonstrates how maths lessons can contribute to tackling this issue.
About the speaker:
Dr Lena Aumann is a mathematics education specialist and research fellow at the University of Bremen. She completed her PhD at the University of Osnabrück in 2024 and worked at Paderborn University from 2024 to 2026. At UPB, she conducted research and taught on the role of Mathematics in Education for Sustainable Development – in particular, on how primary school Mathematics lessons can help children deal with misinformation.
“UPB for Future” Lecture Series
For the seventh time, the Educational Innovation and Higher Education Didactics Office, in collaboration with Prof. Dr René Fahr’s research group, is organising a joint lecture series on sustainability during the winter semester 26/27. The lecture series is entitled “UPB for Future” and is aimed at students from all disciplines and at all stages of their studies, staff members and the interested public. In weekly lectures, the ecological, social and economic dimensions of sustainability are explored and discussed.
