Saving the world and making money in the process? Social entrepreneurship: a balance between idealism, innovation and impact

Location: Hörsaal L1
Organizer: Stabsstelle Bildungsinnovationen und Hochschuldidaktik

About the talk:

Can entrepreneurship be about more than just growth, profit and the next big exit? Social enterprises seek to solve social and environmental problems through entrepreneurial means. However, good intentions are by no means a guarantee of positive outcomes. The talk takes participants on a journey between mission and market, idealism and business model, impact and potential side effects. Using concrete examples, it demonstrates what social enterprises can achieve, where their limits lie, and why the most exciting start-up ideas may well emerge where social change and entrepreneurship intersect.

About the speaker:

Dr Sumaya Islam is a lecturer in entrepreneurship at Paderborn University and has been working intensively on social entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship and social impact since 2016. In doing so, she combines academic expertise with her own start-up experience. As project lead for the externally funded gr33nUP project at Paderborn University, she bridges the gap between sustainability and academia for start-ups and SMEs. She is also involved as the North Rhine-Westphalia regional group spokesperson for the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany (SEND).
