900 students start at Paderborn University

New University President Prof Dr Matthias Bauer welcomes the first semester students

Start of the summer semester: Tuesday, 1 April, marked the beginning of an important phase of life for many new faces at Paderborn University. A total of 900 students (provisional status) were welcomed in lecture theatre L1. Of these, 359 are embarking on a university degree programme for the first time. 564 are embarking on a Master's degree programme. 167 students are on teacher training programmes. As the newly elected Presidential Board took office on the same day, the President of the University, Prof Dr Matthias Bauer, greeted the new students for the first time: "Welcome to Paderborn University. Today you are entering an exciting and formative phase of your life, full of new challenges, encounters and opportunities. Be curious, courageous and open. Because here you have the chance to actively shape your future - we look forward to accompanying you."

Together with Prof. Dr. Beate Flath, Vice President for Teaching, Studies and Quality Management, and Michael Dreier, Mayor of Paderborn, Prof. Bauer spoke about the unique opportunities offered by the Paderborn University and the city of Paderborn - from the diverse research and teaching, to the proximity to the city centre and the idyllic Pader spring area, as well as the gastronomic offerings and opportunities for personal engagement. Prof Flath emphasised: "I would also like to welcome you to our university and to this lively city. We not only offer you a wide range of study programmes, but also many opportunities to get involved in sustainable projects or cultural and social initiatives. There is something for everyone."

Torsten Heß and Lena Wobbe provided insights into campus life and the activities of the General Students' Committee (AStA) and student health management. Author, poetry slammer and musician Florian Wintels, who won the German-language poetry slam championships in 2022 and studied at Paderborn University himself, provided pop culture entertainment. The event was moderated by Julia Ures. Following the welcome in the lecture theatre, Prof Bauer and Prof Flath invited the first-year students to a small "Welcome Coffee" and personally handed out coffee, tea and small snacks in the L-Foyer - for a successful start to their studies.
