For the third time, the Office of Educational Innovation and University Didactics is organising a joint lecture series on the topic of sustainability together with Prof. Dr. René Fahr 's department in the winter semester 2024/25. Basic AI models (especially large language models such as ChatGPT, LLama and Claude) play a central role in an increasing number of applications. However, training and running each of these models leads to the emission of significant amounts of CO2. This talk aims to raise awareness of the scale of the energy requirements of AI systems. Energy-efficient alternatives for training and using basic AI models will also be presented.
About the person:
Prof Dr Axel Ngonga is Professor of Data Science at Paderborn University. His research group develops formalisms for the large-scale representation of knowledge and approaches to neurosymbolic machine learning based on them. With these methods, he aims, among other things, to improve the training and runtime complexity as well as the explainability of AI processes.
