The beginning of October marks the start of a new phase in life for many young adults as they begin their studies. To ease the transition from school mathematics to university courses, the Institute of Mathematics at Paderborn University is offering preliminary courses from 2 to 27 September. The courses will take place in person at the university. In addition, the institute will provide extensive online material so that participants can also refresh the content through self-study. Further information and registration options can be found at go.upb.de/Vorkurs2024.
The preliminary course in mathematics is aimed at all first-year students who are planning to study mathematics, chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science, business informatics, Electrical Engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, computer engineering, technomathematics, materials science or teaching with mathematics as a subject for grammar schools and comprehensive schools or vocational colleges. Accordingly, the preliminary courses serve on the one hand to refresh and deepen knowledge of mathematics at lower and upper secondary level and on the other hand to prepare students for the working methods and content of university mathematics.
The content covered in the preliminary courses is relevant for all future maths courses and is a prerequisite for the degree programme. The institute works with materials that have been tried and tested over many years and are constantly being developed further, which have been created in close co-operation between mathematicians and mathematics didactics experts. At the same time, participants have the opportunity to get to know the university and their new fellow students.
