On June 11, 2025, Dr. Daniela Guericke, Assistant Professor of Stochastic Operations Research at the University of Twente, was a guest at the Chair of Information Systems, specifically Management Information Systems & Operations Research. In her presentation, she provided insights into the EU research project IS2H4C – Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity (2024–2028), which explores innovative approaches for sustainable resource use in four European regions.
At the heart of the project are so-called “Hubs for Circularity” – circular ecosystems that connect industrial clusters with urban and rural areas. Daniela Guericke illustrated the role that Operations Research methods can play in shaping such hubs, for example, in optimizing resource flows, energy management, or identifying symbiotic potential. Among the approaches used are integer optimization, stochastic models, and reinforcement learning. The aim is to transfer these methods into digital tools that provide data-driven decision support for regional stakeholders.
