M.Sc. Matthew Caron successfully passed his doctoral examination on 28 May 2025 with the dissertation entitled
“Machine Learning for Sequential Data: Unraveling the Challenges Associated with Feature Encoding, Output Decoding, and Distribution Shifts.”
In his dissertation, Mr. Caron addresses the challenges of supervised machine learning based on sequential data. Supervised Machine Learning (SML)—the foundation of many modern AI applications—relies on the assumption that the underlying data, both in training and in production, are independently and identically distributed. In practice, however, this assumption is often violated. Against this backdrop, Mr. Caron develops and evaluates methods, models, and frameworks that enable SML models to make accurate predictions on sequential input and output data while remaining robust to changing environmental conditions.
The dissertation was supervised and reviewed by Prof. Dr. Oliver Müller and Prof. Dr. Markus Weinmann (University of Cologne). With the successful defense, Matthew Caron has taken the final step toward earning his doctorate. The chair is proud of his academic achievement and wishes him all the best for his future, both professionally and personally.
Congratulations on your PhD, Matthew!
