The PIVOT project by Prof. Müller, Prof. Baumeister, Matthew Caron, Michael Döring and Julius Broermann is part of a ZDF documentary on the topic of "AI in sport - risk or opportunity?".
PIVOT is an AI tool developed for the handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt, which is based on a Graph Convolutional Neural Network architecture. It was trained on a data set consisting of over 35 million match situations obtained from sensor-based tracking data. The aim of the tool is to provide coaches and trainers with valuable new insights into players, games and match scenarios. It goes beyond basic data analysis by enabling "what-if" scenarios and providing new dimensions for evaluating player actions.
In the documentary, former tennis player Andrea Petković also visits FC Schalke 04 and the German Ski Association, among others.
