In the winter semester of 2025, the Professorship of International Management launched an innovative bachelor module called “Innovation in Intercultural Virtual Teams.” This module provides students with a unique opportunity to participate in the X-Culture program - an international collaborative initiative that brings together students, professors, businesses, and researchers to tackle real-world business challenges. The program involves 160 universities across 35 countries, offering students a truly international learning experience. Each semester, more than 3,500 students participate in the program for about 2 months, forming teams of five to six members, each from a different country.
Real Challenges, Real Companies, Real Impact
The participants work on authentic international business challenges presented by global companies. Acting as international business consultants, students develop strategic solutions, conduct comprehensive market analyses, and navigate complex business problems. In parallel with the X-Culture program, students receive evidence-based insights into key topics such as cross-cultural communication, global leadership, conflict management, virtual collaboration, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and international innovation. Reflection exercises further consolidate these insights, allowing students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experiences and derive valuable implications for their future careers.
A Challenging but Rewarding Journey
Working in a virtual, cross-cultural setting presents unique challenges. Time zone differences, diverse work styles, and language barriers can complicate teamwork. However, overcoming these obstacles cultivates resilience, adaptability, and global leadership skills. Through continuous reflection and learning, students develop the mindset and competencies required to excel in international environments.
Student Experiences
“The X-Culture project was an unforgettable experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so much about the realities of teamwork. There were definitely moments of frustration, but those challenges made me stronger and showed me just how important preparation, empathy, and adaptability are when working with others. This experience has provided a foundation of confidence that will support future participation in group projects, knowing I can handle the ups and downs that come with collaboration. The lessons I’ve learned here will stick with me, not just in my studies but also as I take on new opportunities in my career. It is exciting to think about how this journey has laid the foundation for building better, more meaningful collaborations in the future.”
“The X-Culture project was far from perfect, but it provided invaluable lessons about global teamwork and virtual collaboration. I gained firsthand experience navigating the challenges of working across cultural and geographical boundaries, managing communication barriers, and stepping into a leadership role under difficult circumstances.”
“Reflecting on my experience in the ‘Innovation in Intercultural Virtual Teams’ module has been a substantial opportunity to gain my first real and authentic work experience. What makes this experience even more valuable is the fact that I had the chance to work and collaborate in a multicultural setting through the X-Culture program. Honestly, my journey as part of this module was filled with learning experiences and self-reflection. This reflective experience supported me academically, professionally, and personally. Through this program, I was able to step out of my comfort zone and actively engage with the challenges of virtual teamwork across cultural boundaries.”
Preparing for the Future of Work
The GVT program equips students with practical experience that extends beyond theoretical knowledge. By engaging in international consulting projects, students develop critical business skills, expand their global networks, and gain a competitive advantage in the job market.
The “Innovation in Intercultural Virtual Teams” module will be offered again in the winter semester of 2025/26, continuing to shape the next generation of globally minded professionals.
