Opinions and views vary from person to person, and in today’s world, there is probably no place where this is more evident than on Twitter. In this study, Professor Mirbabaie analyses how different user types communicate regarding topics, tweet characteristics, links, and specific sentiments toward refugees. Following 13 September 2015, after Germany decided to implement border controls, all tweets containing the keyword “Flüchtlinge” (English: refugees) were collected. Out of the 763,752 tweets, the 2,495 most retweeted ones were selected for the analysis. Said analysis revealed that public actor tweets were the primary source of positive sentiment and support, while private actor tweets were more diverse in sentiments toward refugees. Throughout the news media tweets, traditional journalistic norms of impartiality and objectivity prevailed.
