On 28th May 2018 (1-2pm) Dr. Matthias Giesecke, research assistant at the RWI Essen, will give a presentation about “The Retirement Mortality Puzzle: Evidence from a Regression Discontinuity Design” in Q4.245. Afterwards, Mr. Giesecke will be available for questions and discussions. His presentation is part of: https://wiwi.uni-paderborn.de/dep1/me/research/discussing-research/seam/
I estimate the effect of retirement on mortality, exploiting discontinuities at age-based eligibility thresholds for pension claiming in Germany. The analysis is based on unique social security records that document the retirement age and the age at death for the predominant part of the German population. Using variation from bunching at eligibility thresholds, I demonstrate that retirement can have both mortality-decreasing and mortality-increasing effects. To reconcile these heterogeneous effects with likewise mixed evidence from the literature, I provide evidence that the retirement-mortality nexus is largely driven by the activity change around the retirement threshold.
