Teaching

Students of the B.Sc. Economics and the B.Sc. International Business Studies can take the specialization "Taxation, Accounting and Finance" since 2015.

The specialization is documented by an addition "with major in Taxation, Accounting and Finance" on the degree certificate.

Further information on the TAF specialization (B.Sc.) can be found here

The chair's modules are offered as "blended learning" modules. We thus follow the mission statement of UPB and contribute to the implementation of the "e-learning strategy". In this context, the modules "M.184.3270 Financial Economics" and "M.184.4276 Banking Economics" were awarded with the Basic E-Learning Label of the "Stabsstelle Bildungsinnovationen & Hochschuldidaktik" of the University of Paderborn in WS 2022/23.

All modules are supported by teaching videos. These videos as well as the corresponding slides are already made available permanently within a permanently existing PANDA course before the start of a module.

The participants of the module prepare the teaching content of the videos independently and flexibly ("e-learning units") up to the dates specified in the introductory course ("Einführungsveranstaltung"). In the first part of the additional face-to-face lectures ("classrooms"), students' questions about the lecture material from the videos are answered and selected content is discussed in greater depth. In the second part of the classrooms, current topics from the field of banking and finance are presented and discussed.

In addition to the classrooms on the lecture videos, regular exercises take place exclusively in presence.

More module-specific information (especially for the seminars) is given in the respective introductory events ("Einführungsveranstaltungen"), which take place regularly in the first week of lectures.

Research papers are discussed from both, a substantive and methodological perspective. The reading material is carefully selected to reflect the current developments of research in banking and finance in a structured way. Participants are required carefully read selected research papers, provide thorough reviews of the papers and critically discuss them by means of a presentation.

  Term ECTS Language Contact
ST 5 German, English Kosi, U.; Uhde, A.

Note: The module is offered in cooperation with the TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency. It provides participants with a systematic overview of existent academic research in the broad area of taxation, accounting and finance. It covers seminal research papers about financial reporting and its effects on the capital markets, the role of accounting information for internal decision makers, the importance of taxation and its regulation, as well as corporate finance decisions in firms. The connecting point for these streams of research is provision and dissemination of information by firms to various stakeholder groups. Key theoretical concepts and empirical considerations are presented and discussed in class. Participants are trained to assess the implications of research results.

The module’s reading material is carefully selected so that it depicts the development of research in taxation, accounting and finance in a structured way. Participants are required to work through selected research papers, critically discuss them in class and make a presentation. On the one hand, the module serves as the base for further specialisation in these research areas. The knowledge is essential for young researchers building their own research ideas that use existing research as foundation but are still innovative. On the other hand, the module is attractive for young researchers in less related areas that want a basic understanding of key research developments in taxation, accounting and finance. This knowledge can help promoting interdisciplinary research ideas.

Teaching prizes were awarded by the Fachschaftsrat Wirtschaftswissenschaften until 2018.
