Bachelor Students

The Basic Business English for Economists aims to provide you with the language skills necessary for the working world including telephoning, email writing, presenting, negotiating, meetings, socializing etc and takes place twice per week. This course assumes students have a basic level of high school English with B1/B2 language skills in reading, listening and speaking. As the course content is highly contextualized it is not necessary to have pre-course good writing skills. For weaker students the B1 Speaking Skills in Business English allows students to work more on improving their speaking with a lower amount of new vocabulary. Because the Advanced course builds on the Basic course it is not possible to do both at the same time or to combine it with the B1 speaking course.. Business English Grammar in Context is a short intensive alternative approach to the structure of the English language in business communication situations.

Language Level

All of the modules assume that German students of management sciences and economics had enough English at school to put them on a B1 Level in terms of active skills (speaking and writing) and around B2 in terms of passive skills (listening and reading). As such it is not necessary to do a preliminary test. All of the courses are designed to be able to deal with different levels within the class (B1 to C1) as the focus is primarily on new vocabulary, which was not dealt with at high school

Which course?

Basic Business English for Students of Economics and Management Sciences (W3061)

The Basic module aims to provide students with the communication skills required in everyday business situations. That includes telephoning, giving presentations, holding meetings, carrying out negotiations, socializing and writing emails. We also look at the role of intercultural awareness in business. The course takes place twice a week (4 SWS), with each session lasting 90 minutes.

Advanced Business English for Students of Economics and Management Sciences (W3064)

The advanced module is designed for students who have already completed the Basic module. This course allows you to expand the vocabulary and communication skills achieved in the Basic module (W3061). It includes topics such as additional presentation skills, doing job interviews and writing job applications. The module also provides space and time for students to pursue their own specific language interests. The module takes place once per week (2 SWS). Please note that it is not possible to attend the Basic and the Advanced module in the same semester.

Business English Grammar in Context (W3066)

Some students need and like grammar. This compact module offers you a different review of grammar (especially English tenses)  by focusing on the functions of business communication.

B1 Speaking Skills for Business English (3065)

The module aims to provide students with the communication skills required in everyday business situations. That includes telephoning, giving presentations, holding meetings, carrying out negotiations, socializing and writing emails. We also look at the role of intercultural awareness in business. The course takes place twice a week (4 SWS), with each session lasting 90 minutes. Compared to module 3061 the language content is lower in terms of vocabulary load and there is a greater emphasis on speaking skills. I
